Emergency and Perioperative Approaches in Pediatric Endocrinology

Back in the year 2020, the Rectorate of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa announced that 100 books were to be published on behalf of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Turkish Republic. The team of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology with their considerable experience wished to contribute to this endeavor being one of the oldest sub-branches at the Department of Pediatrics at the Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty and honoring the valuable legacies of our late respected Professor Nadir Hatemi M.D. and our distinguished Professor Sezer Hatemi M.D.

While admissions of pediatric endocrine emergencies are less frequent in pediatric emergency clinics compared to disorders in other subspecializations, their treatment requires very specialized knowledge and experience which can pose challenges for intervention. In certain pediatric endocrine emergencies, making a differential diagnosis can also be particularly challenging. In this context, we embarked on this journey with our young colleagues, believing that compiling practical applications in this regard in the form of a book would be very beneficial for physicians working in emergency departments. Our primary goal was to enable physicians to easily make a differential diagnosis and provide comprehensive treatment when they refer to our book. We also believe that our case examples will contribute to this goal. In addition, considering that special knowledge is required for taking the necessary precautions and treatments before, during, and immediately after surgery, i.e., the perioperative period, when children with endocrine diseases need to undergo surgery, we found it appropriate to include a relevant topic in our book.

We believe it is important for surgical clinics to have a copy of this book as well as pediatric emergency clinics. In 2023, as we celebrate the 100th year of the Turkish republic, our hearts swell with pride. With this noble sentiment, we hope that the information contained in our book will be of benefit to all colleagues who need guidance in pediatric endocrine emergencies and in the perioperative period of surgical endocrine disorders.
