Optimal Tuning of Mass Dampers

Tuned mass dampers are a system used in all kinds of mechanical systems and are useful in dampening disturbing vibrations that occur in the system. It is a system that can be applied to towers, bridges and high-rise buildings that are particularly sensitive to vibration under the effects of wind and earthquakes. The effectiveness of these systems is only ensured when they are properly adjusted according to the characteristics of the structure. This makes the optimum design of the system important. The development and design of new types of mass damper systems make these systems important for creating earthquake-resistant structures today.

In the content of this book, of which we are the editor, passive and active structural control systems are introduced, and then equations of motion representing the most general form of the problem are presented. Afterwards, classical, metaheuristic and artificial neural networks-based optimization of tuned mass dampers are presented. The optimum designs of tuned liquid dampers and active tuned mass dampers are given lastly. As the editors of the book, we would like to thank everyone who contributed to this book as an author.

We are proud to take part in the '100 Books for the 100th Anniversary of the Republic' project created at Istanbul University - Cerrahpaşa to crown the 100th anniversary of the establishment of our Republic, which was founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as a result of the national struggle and sovereignty. Also, we thank all people taking part in this project.

We commemorate our Great Leader Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, our martyrs and veterans with respect and mercy.
