History Education in the 100th Year of the Republic of Turkey

This year we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. For this reason, we wanted to contribute to the "100 Books for the 100th Anniversary of the Republic Project" organised by Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa. Among the many academic studies we have carried out, we had given up due to the concern that we would not have enough time to produce a book on the subject. While planning the invited and panel speeches of the ISHE programme we organised in September 2023, we had thought of publishing the speeches evaluating the 100th Year of the Republic as a separate book. With the guidance of my esteemed colleague Prof. Dr. Ali Tilbe, we decided to publish this work from IUC Press. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him.

In this book we planned, we wanted each author to deal with their subjects from the perspective of a 100-year process. Some of our authors had difficulty in doing this due to their subjects. However, we completed our process with the eight articles we received. Thus, two main themes emerged in our book. The first one answers the question of where we are in the 100th year of Turkey in terms of historiography and teaching. The second one was on the adventure of education policies and coeducation in the 100 years of the Republic. As an editor, we did preliminary and final readings on each article. In addition to this, we also carried out the refereeing process in order to evaluate each article by an external eye. Thus, this work has emerged as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of our Republic.

The book, which we have prepared, has dealt with the change and transformation in the subjects we have determined in the context of history and education in Turkey in the last 100 years. Within this framework, the first chapter article was 100 years of Ottoman history research. Our author Şirin tried to show how the Ottoman history research, which was thought to have been neglected especially in the first years of the Republican period, followed a course.

The title "History Education in the 100th Year of the Republic of Turkey" is based on four main themes. In the first one, Prof. Dr. Bülent Akbaba answered the question of how history education pedagogy and general approaches have changed in Turkey in the 100-year period. Again, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eray Alaca examined the change in history programmes in the 100-year period, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tercan Yıldırım examined the transformation in history textbooks. Prof. Dr. Salih Özbaran, the doyen of our field, touched upon the differentiation in the field of history education in recent years.

The second main axis of our book was the change in education policies and women's education in the 100-year period. In this context, Prof. Dr. Filiz Meşeci Georgietti wrote the first chapter on the education policies of the Republic in the 100-year period. Afterwards, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Betül Batır discussed the development of coeducation in the 100-year period, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aynur Soydan Erdemir discussed the construction of modern women's identity in the Republican period.

I hope that this study, which we have planned as a small gift to the 100th anniversary of our Republic, will contribute to the reader. I would like to thank the editorial board of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa and the valuable staff of IUC Press, the publishing house of our university, for their contributions to the publication of the book.
